Text or Ring Radio Stations
Texting or calling radio stations is an incredibly effective way to show the media just how many people care about Victoria Park and how strongly we oppose the idea of destroying it to build a stadium. Politicians pay close attention to what’s trending on talkback radio and radio stations use listener feedback to shape their programming. Yes, they know organised groups are participating, but the data still matters - and so does your voice! We need your help to do this and to make this a sustained effort over the next three months during the 100 day review!
Let’s flood the airwaves with our message - Save Victoria Park! Together, we can keep the pressure on and ensure this vital green space is preserved for future generations.
Here’s how you can help -
Texting Radio Stations
When texting, you must include your first name and suburb, e.g., "Christine from Herston" or "Chris from West End" if you’re texting from work
It’s most impactful to text while the issue is being discussed, but if that’s not possible, don’t worry - your text still matters!
Aim to send at least one text per week. Set a reminder on your phone, and start today!
We also have a Text Alert Group who receive an alert text when someone in the group hears a radio mention of Victoria Park that we might respond to. If you would like to join this Text Alert Group, send an email with your mobile phone number to vicparkrag@gmail.com.

No stadium in Victoria Park
A stadium next door to Aust biggest hospital- no way!
I don't want to be in an ambulance enroute to RBWH when the footy finishes - no stadium in Victoria Park!
We need more green space not less - no stadium in Victoria Park.
Victoria Park is very hilly. It's not suitable for a stadium build - very expensive, very destructive!
Terms of Reference talk about 'promoting long-term mobility solutions'. A Victoria Park stadium would clog up already busy and often congested, roads around the park

Proximity to RBWH: VP is next door to Australia's largest hospital. Metro North website data - 9000 workers and "in 2023, we provided more than one million episodes of high quality healthcare to patients". Major streets around RBWH are already congested, particularly at peak hour, and this will only increase with rising population numbers.
Green space: Brisbane has the least amount of green space within 3km of the city centre of any Australian capital city. Adelaide (10 times more) and Perth (6 times more) are the leaders by far. We should be creating more!
Densification of Inner City areas: Population growth is well documented for Brisbane and SEQ, Back yards with trees and grass are fast disappearing as high rise apartments take the place of houses. We need more green space for the rapidly densifying inner city suburbs, not less.
Rich First Nations History: "Barrambin" is the First nations name for this area and means 'windy place.' York’s Hollow (state Heritage listed area in the Park) was a meeting place for over 1000 First Nations People pre-white settlement. Many lived here in an area that had clear, running water (long ago diverted) and fished and hunted. These were the same reasons that this area then became much desired by white settlers.
2025 is the 150-year birthday of Victoria Park. The Park was gazetted in 1875 to be the 'green lungs of the city". It was then 130 hectares and through various government projects, has been reduced to less than half - 64 hectares. Slicing and dicing continues: about 5 hectares were resumed in 2001 for the ICB. Perth has Kings Park - 400 hectares which is larger than Central Park in NYC.
Expensive site for stadium. Victoria Park is very hilly terrain which makes for some stunning city views from the ridges. However, as a site for a mega stadium, the earthworks alone to 'flatten and fill' the site would cost an extortionate amount of money.
Mental Health benefits: Victoria Park isn’t just a park—it’s a lifeline for mental health. In today’s busy world, we need green spaces to slow down, feel grounded, and reconnect with ourselves. Let’s protect this space for all who seek peace here. It's also a haven from staff, students and clients of RBWH, University of Qld Medical School and Oral Health Centre, QUT - all these major institutions and employers lie on the boundaries of the park.
BCC Master Plan for Vic Park: The Victoria Park Master Plan was developed over four years and released in mid-2023. At no point during this consultation was a stadium a part of the Vision, the Draft or the Final Master Plan. The ratepayers of Brisbane have invested millions into this plan’s development, including large consultancy costs. A change to the entire vision, wasting four years of planning and flying in the face of Local Government election promises, should not be acceptable to the newly elected State government.
Environmental Issues: Cities have more buildings, roads, and other infrastructure that absorb and retain heat from the sun, especially materials like asphalt and concrete. These surfaces are often called "heat sinks" Urban green spaces, such as parks, and bushland, are considered the best heat sinks in urban areas. Victoria Park is a wonderful heat sink and must not be reduced in size and certainly should not have a large, concrete, heat generating structure; like a stadium built inside it.
