State Heritage Application

Introduction

On the 7th January, 2025, the Department for Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) accepted an application for State heritage listing for the Herston side of Victoria Park. This was the culmination of nearly two years of research and preparation. Some of the park is already State heritage listed - namely the part of the park south of Gilchrist Avenue. However while the Herston side of the park is included on the Brisbane City Council Local heritage listing, it isn’t currently State heritage listed. State heritage listing for the remaining part of the park would provide a much higher level of recognition and increased protection for Victoria Park / Barrambin.

We Need You to Write a Submission Supporting the Application Before 17 February 2025 at 5.00pm

We need people to write letters in support of the heritage application. We only have a short window to get as many submissions in as possible. Every single letter helps strengthen the case for heritage listing, showing just how much this park means to the community.

Any submission written in support of the heritage application must “be made on the basis that the place which is the subject of the application does or does not satisfy the cultural heritage criteria.” Any submission which doesn’t focus on the cultural heritage criteria won’t be counted.

There are two options when writing submissions in support of the application -

If writing your own submission in support of the heritage application, you must focus on at least one of the cultural heritage criteria for your submission to be counted. These are listed below for your reference.

Heritage Criteria

A place may be entered in the Queensland Heritage Register as a State heritage place if it satisfies 1 or more of the following criteria -

(1) the place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland’s history;

(3) the place is important in demonstrating the principal characteristics of a particular class of cultural places;

Additional Background to the State Heritage Application

Areas Which Are Already Heritage Listed

The following parts of Victoria Park are already heritage listed -

See below for a map of the current Heritage listed Spring Hill side of Victoria Park, which also includes the fields below Gilchrist Avenue.

Background to the Application

Our application was prompted by the fact that many of the State heritage features of the southern part of the park are shared by the Herston [northern] side of the park. There also additional unique features which are part of the northern side of the park. It has taken our team considerable time to  collect historical information to ensure that our application met the very high standards required for consideration by the higher level ‘State’ heritage recognition.
