Email to Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner

22 March 2024

Mr Adrian Schrinner

Lord Mayor of Brisbane

Office of the Lord Mayor
GPO Box 2287
Brisbane Qld 4001

Dear Mr Schrinner

It has been a tumultuous week for people who care deeply about Victoria Park Barrambin (VPB) and its role as an iconic green space in our rapidly growing city.

As you know, we have been actively involved in all planning phases of the re-development of VPB. Whilst we have not always agreed on all aspects of the final Master Plan, we have always supported your vision for a world-class park on this site.  Any plan to build a huge stadium in the Park, situated within three densely populated suburbs, and adjacent to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, campuses of the University of Queensland and of Queensland University of Technology as well as four large schools, is completely inappropriate.

We were, of course, pleased when the Premier announced that the recommendation to build a new stadium at VPB was off-the-table and likewise delighted when you also said in the Courier Mail article of 20 March  'a 55,000 seat stadium is not part of my plan to transform Victoria Park into an iconic parkland for generations to come'.

However, as always, the media thrives on controversy and there have been countless news articles, radio talk-back shows and TV news spots since Monday's announcement.  Some of these, we suspect, are misquoting you or taking your comments out of context.  This has created some confusion within the community.

We support your decision to reject the proposal and would like to meet with you to discuss and clarify your decision with respect to a giant stadium in VPB, now and in the future.

A face-to-face meeting would be great but a phone or Teams link-up would be fine also.

Your sincerely

Sue Bremner
